Description

Given the presence of the Salsapariglia nectar, this multi flower honey has sweeter scents and flavors compared to the monofloral Strawberry tree honey. Just like the pure Arbutus honey (strawberry tree honey) it can be used with the typical food of Sardinian gastronomy like: Sas sebadas, fresh Ricotta, little seasoned pecorino cheeses and also as an ingredient on desserts to enhance their taste with more delicacy and sweetness. This honey is not the result of a mixture but a natural product which comes from the spontaneous selection of bees. The nutraceutical properties of this honey remain the same as those of the pure strawberry tree honey with a less pungent and bitter taste.

Arbutus unedo famiglia ericacee

Small arboreal plant with a maximum heigh of 10 meters, evergreen, it spontaneously grows in Italy where it contributes to form the Mediterranean scrub. Its flowers are gamopetalous with a tubular shape and closed like a jug. The blooming goes from November to February while the fruits, red edibles berries, mature in late autumn from the previous year’s blooming and concurrently with the new blooming. Because of the particular jug shape, the inner part of the flower which contains the nectar and the pollen is difficult to reach in the honey bees fase of foraging. In addition, with the blooming happening from November to February, the climate is not always favorable for the honey production which can be negatively influenced by the bad weather. These mentioned above are the reasons why the production of this honey is often limited and in some years it becomes a real rarity.

Salsapariglia sarda
Smilax aspera (liliaceae)
Smilace spinosa

Indigenous climbing plant, common in the woods and in the scrub of the Mediterranean region, its supple branches are provided with stipules transformed into robust and long tendrils; the flowers are small with 6 white, sweet-smelling petals, the female flowers mature in red globular berries. This specie’s roots find a use in medicine as diuretics, stimulating, cleansing and anti-rheumatic. This plant blooms from August to October and the berry fruits, gathered in clusters, reach their maturation in autumn.
